Canary Cam
For anywhere from $40 to $200 dollars you can purchase an iPad stand that allows you to use an iPad as a document camera. Looking on line, you can find several low-cost DIY methods for making a stand. I didn't feel the commercial items were worth the money, and none of the DIY designs looked like they would work the way I wanted. So, I came up with my own design. It cost me $0 to make and took less than 30 minutes.
Due to its yellow color, I named it the Canary Cam.

Materials:
Optional:
Programs:
- two tall (15") cat litter containers
- one 8" piece of 2x4
- one 9 and 1/2 inch by 22 inch piece of 3/4 inch plywood (or shelving)
- one brick for ballast (gravel would also work well- don't need a lot)
- two 1" screws (hold lid to 2x4)
- two 2" screws (hold plywood- through lid- to 2x4)
- two 1 and 1/2" screws (hold lid onto bucket after 'clicked on')
Optional:
- Remove label from container- Goof Off ® works very well for this but is smelly. Follow all directions! Use outdoors and allow to ventilate well before bringing inside)
- Decorate container with markers, decals, bumper stickers, etc.
- Small LED light to mount to bottom of board- if shadows are an issue. I have not needed one.
Programs:
- Reflector program on Apple computer ~$10 (AirServer is also supposed to be good, but I haven't tried it.)
- Explain Everything app on iPad ~$3 (You don't need this but I have found it to be well worth the money, even when not using the iPad as a document camera.)
